Traditionally a highlight of the Spring, 2021 sees the Chelsea Flower Show taking place for the first time in September. Another first is the inclusion of Houseplant Studios in the show and N1 Garden Centre was delighted to have been approached by RHS to style one! Even better, we were awarded Gold and overall winners in the Best Houseplant Studio category!
Creative Director Paul Holt has always loved the Autumn – he spent his formative years crunching horse chestnut leaves in ditches and as a teenager grew endless varieties of pumpkins for Halloween. His obsession with the season certainly shines through in his design! His aim was to capture the magic of Autumn in all its colourful glory with the outside brought in using a palette of yellows, browns and oranges. With Winter not far away and the nights drawing in, many of us will be spending more time at home so comfort and warmth is evoked using natural, sustainable materials mixed with lush, soft foliage, colourful fruits and vibrant, variegated plants.
Our favourite plant for this time of year is Nertera granadensis, or The Bead Plant. The fresh-looking orange, yellow and white berries could not look more Autumnal if they tried! A great plant for adding vibrant colour to your home, it is particularly effective as a table dressing with the berries lasting well into the New Year.
To recreate the look at home:
- Natural materials are calming and warming – we love baskets, wooden pots and earthy ceramics.
- If you only do one thing, update your pots! New colours can energise your space.
- With light levels lowering, consider moving your plants nearer to windows.
- We may have packed our studio full but creating just one focal point can be really effective! Use items that you might already have, like a plate or bowl, and combine with a plant and pot.
